When you think of Drenthe, you think of hunebeds. There are no fewer than 52 hunebeds here. And Borger is home to the largest hunebed in the Netherlands—older than the pyramids or Stonehenge! Right next to it is the Hunebedcentrum, where you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back into prehistory and can meet the people who built the hunebeds. Download the Oerverhalen app in advance for the ultimate experience!
Discover the secrets of Drenthe
Upon entering the museum, you’ll find yourself in an exhibition about prehistoric burial monuments—the hunebeds. Read and listen to stories about the hunebed builders and our ancestors—and learn how they spent their days 5,000 years ago. View stunning dioramas, play fun games, and challenge each other with quizzes. Then walk over to the knowledge center for the Hondsrug UNESCO Geopark exhibition. Did you know, for example, that the area was shaped by ice ages? And where are the hotspots? You’ll discover all of that here!
Step into Prehistory
Then head outside for a true dive into history. In the Prehistoric Park, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back into prehistory. From a Neanderthal camp and a reindeer hunters’ hut, you’ll walk past burial mounds and peat paths to the prehistoric village, where you’ll come face to face with the builders of the hunebeds. Experience what it feels like to walk on natural materials along the barefoot trail, shoot a bow and arrow, visit the butterfly garden, and explore the discovery trails through the largest boulder garden in the Netherlands.
