Our tips for your cycling vacation in Drenthe
In the Drents-Friese Wold, youâll find an extensive network of bike paths, which can be divided into three categories: paved paths, semi-paved paths, and sandy trails for mountain bikers. One of the best-known cycling routes that also passes through the Drents-Friese Wold is the Drentse Fietspad, which stretches over more than 1,000 kilometers. This route takes you past dolmens, old farmhouses, and through beautiful nature reserves. In addition to the Drents-Friese Wold, youâll also cycle through the Dwingelderveld.
Another beautiful bike route through the Dwingelderveld starts at the Dwingelderveld Visitor Center. This bike route takes you through vast forests, across picturesque heathlands, past the charming Anserdennen tea house, and through the picturesque village of Dwingeloo. Halfway along the route, youâll pass the âboslounge,â an information point run by Staatsbosbeheer. At the end of the route, youâll reach the Benderse Berg.
For mountain biking enthusiasts, special mountain bike trails have been created through the forests and across the heathlands. These trails vary in difficulty, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced mountain bikers. In the Drents-Friese Wold, there is a route of about 50 kilometers. This route consists of two loops: a blue loop near Appelscha and a green loop near Smilde. The routes follow not only existing trails but also specially constructed singletrack trails that wind through the forest. The course is varied and takes you through dense forests, past ponds, and across heathlands. The loop near Appelscha also runs across a vast sand drift.
Definitely worth doing again!
